PROJECTS
Electronic vignette based road tolling system
- Governmental, Logistics, Retail
The use case
The Hungarian State Motorway Management Company operates over 1300 km of toll road network in Hungary.
The tolling is time based with daily, weekly, monthly and yearly vignettes. When our system launched, they used physical vignettes, but changed to electronic ones during the years.
The company sells vignettes directly in stores, via partner stores, in SMS, and online as well. Customers select the vehicle type, the vignette type, the starting date, then provide the licence plate number.
Automatic cameras around the country continuously take photos of the cars passing by, automatically recognize the licence plate number, and check if it has a valid vignette.
The system needed to manage the surcharge process in case of invalid or missing vignette, as well as to provide helpdesk functionalities.
The solution
As a subcontractor of Laurel Ltd. our developers created a system which includes
- an administration system, which enables product setup, monitoring panels, and helpdesk interfaces.
- a module which manages the surcharge process, by automatically requesting car owner data from state databases, and creating the surcharge documentation.
- a consumer facing web site where they can register and order vignettes.
- a robust API to partners (tank stations) which enables selling vignettes via thousands of selling points, and collecting the data necessary for validity checks.
- a robust API to receive licence plate validity requests from roadside cameras.
The result
The Hungarian State Motorway Management Company sells over 19 million vignettes each year on 6800 selling points.
The system serves 200 000 transactions daily, including over 100 000 validity check transactions. The system manages 200 000 surcharge cases.
