Loyalty system with multilateral clearing

The use case

SuperShop operates the largest consumer loyalty program in Hungary with over 2 million card holders.

Card holders of the multi-partner loyalty system collect points when they shop in supermarkets, tank stations, and 800 various shops around the country. The number of points depend on their shopping card value, while certain products might earn them more points. Then, they can spend the points in most of the partner shops as well, using their SuperShop card just like a credit card.

The solution

As a subcontractor of Laurel Ltd. our company developed the back office solution.

The biggest challenge was the huge transaction volume the system serves. The credit/debit transactions work similarly to a banking system. When a customer pays in a shop, the sale is registered in the cashier, then, using the SuperShop card in the POS terminal, the loyalty point credit transaction is recorded according to the points allocated to the volume, retailer, and product.

This brought the second challenge, the complex discount offering system, where partners may give more points when card holders buy a specific product/package.

Card holders are incentivized to provide a lot of data about them, which is analyzed by SuperShop’s marketing experts to provide the best offerings which target specific segments of consumers.

The system contains a multilateral clearing algorithm which regularly calculates the financial settlement amongst the partner companies of the program according to the credit/debit transactions made in their stores.

The result

SuperShop is by far the largest loyalty program in Hungary, and is one of the best recognized brands amongst consumers.

As the loyalty card transactions are integrated into the retail POS terminals, SuperShop’s daily transaction volume is comparable to the number of credit card payments in the country.
